Bows poised for action

Updated: Nov 19, 2021

HOBART will host another big sporting event this weekend as the country’s best archers compete in the Australian Archery Open.

This is the second consecutive year Hobart will host the prestigious tournament at the archers complex at Lauderdale.

‘It’s very good for Tasmania as we get to see top archers here,” said Phil O’Halloran, president of Hobart Archers.

An open event featuring 110 archers from across the country will be held today with the final four competitors shooting off for medals tomorrow afternoon.

A team competition will also be held tomorrow with an invitational two-day event on Monday and Tuesday featuring Australian squad members aiming for the World Archery Championships in Denmark in July.

National Youth Archery Championships gold medallist Anna Walls, of Hobart, is looking forward to competing on home soil.

‘This is just another step along the way and I just want to get as much experience as I can.”

Rising Victorian star Alec Potts is one of the favourites for the event.

‘It should be pretty good. It’ll be pretty windy but everyone is on the same field so you just have to deal with it the best way possible.”

The field will also feature three-time Olympian Matthew Gray and world indoor champion Ryan Tyack, who praised the facility as a great place to shoot.

Entry to the event is free.

It starts at 9.30am today.
