Sport wrap: Australian Wrestling returns to the Olympic stage

For the first time since Rio 2016, Australia was represented in Wrestling at the Olympics with

Jayden Lawrence and Georgii Okorokov both making their Olympic debut in the Freestyle category.

Jayden lost his opening round match in the Freestyle 86kg class to Iranian Hassan Yazdanicharati 10-0, but progressed through to the repechage after Yazdanicharati progressed through to the gold medal match.

The 29-year-old then fought Greek wrestler Dauren Kurugliev at the Champ-de-Mars Arena for a spot in the bronze medal match, but was unable to progress and fell 10-0 to his competitor.

In the men’s Freestyle 65kg, Georgii took on Puerto Rican Sebastien Rivera in the opening round.

Despite a strong battle by the 27-year-old, he was unable to get past his competitor, losing 12-2.

As Rivera would lose his next match, Georgii was unable to progress through the repechage and was eliminated from the competition.
