Round 20 F1 driver power rankings: The tussle at the top continues to deliver

Writer's picture: Ben WaterworthBen Waterworth

Another win for Ferrari, this time in the other car. An Aussie who falls back in the rankings due to a poor weekend. And a Championship leader who found himself further back than he would want. It all was happening in Mexico.

Before see how it all changes things in these rankings, the usual disclaimer. You know the drill, these are all subjective and based mainly on my (incredibly smart) opinion mixed with form and on-track results, meaning it is a generally subjective list that holds no real weight except for the large basis of fact I like to think I can generate.

So with that in mind, let’s get to the rankings!

10. George Russell (-)

A solid weekend for George to get some more points for the team. That’s about all there is to say about him.

9. Lewis Hamilton (new)

It’s funny ranking the Mercedes drivers right now. We all know they’re there. We all know they’re getting fairly solid points each race. But that’s about it right? There isn’t much else to talk about. Lewis gets the bump on his teammate for his move at the end of the race and the fact he finished fourth. That’s the logic here. Easy.

8. Oscar Piastri (-3)

Well he can’t be great every weekend right? Things were always going to be tough for Oscar after his poor qualifying, but drove well enough to fight his way back into the points at least. Hopefully it’ll all be a blip and he’ll be back to form in Sao Paulo this weekend.

7. Franco Colapinto (-3)

Drops mainly to the rising of those above him, but a solid weekend still for Colapinto. No points, but had some good battles and finished 12th. Can’t fault that at all.

6. Kevin Magnussen (+4)

It’s sad to think that we’re only a few more races away from seeing the end of K-Mag, especially when he is capable of delivering amazing weekends like this. A great result for the Danish driver.

5. Nico Hulkenberg (+1)

I still believe Nico might be the driver of the season, as he continues to shine every weekend and bring home more points for the team. How much is he regretting his decision to leave for Sauber next year? Only time will tell.

4. Carlos Sainz (+3)

Drove a faultless weekend and deserved the win, which was even more popular given next season we know a win for Sainz will be about as likely as Norris and Verstappen not getting into some controversial moment in the next race. An easy riser in these rankings.

3. Max Verstappen (-1)

Yeah he got his elbows out and yeah he got punished for it, but still did a solid job to recover to finish in sixth and bring home vital points for his Championship aspirations. Once again, it’s all he can hope for given the circumstances.

2. Lando Norris (+1)

Did a great job to get to second after long periods where it looked like a podium might’ve been out of the question. After dropping points to Verstappen in Austin, he’ll be thrilled to take more out of his rival in Mexico. Bring on Brazil to resume this epic battle.

1. Charles Leclerc (-)

Keeping Charles at the top as he very much should’ve been in second but a late mistake in his battle with Norris cost him. Still, he continues to be in fine form and keeps his very slim chances at taking the Drivers’ Championship alive.
