Noni Going Solo And Loving It

Updated: Nov 19, 2021

NONI Hazlehurst has achieved a lot in her stellar career but is about to achieve a rare first during her time in Hobart.

For the first time she will perform at the Theatre Royal as the star of the one-woman play Mother, which was written especially for her.

The show, which starts tonight and runs to Saturday, sees Hazlehurst play a homeless woman called Christy who details her colourful and troubled life to the audience.

‘I really love the challenge physically and technically of doing a play by myself,” Hazlehurst told the Mercury. ‘It’s not difficult because I relate to her and empathise with her.”

With a career spanning more than 40 years, it is the first time Hazlehurst has been involved in a one-woman theatre show.

Director Matt Scholten said working with Hazlehurst was a delight.

‘She’s incredible as a performer and has this uncanny ability to create empathy,” he said.

The play explores themes of judgment, homelessness, domestic violence and people who fall through the cracks.

Tickets are available at http://www.theatreroyal.com.au.
